The Ray and Geotab Fleet Electrification Study Supports Interstate EV Infrastructure Development
The Ray and Geotab Inc. have announced findings from a collaborative analysis of truck movement patterns, providing a data-driven framework for State Departments of Transportation (State DOTs) to strategically plan and fund electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. With medium- and heavy-duty vehicles responsible for nearly 24% of transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions, this research is a critical step in guiding the nation’s electrification strategy.
By utilizing Geotab’s advanced telematics, The Ray analyzed two pilot corridors—a regional route from Dallas to Atlanta and a local route between the Port of Savannah and Atlanta. The study revealed distinct movement patterns in each, demonstrating that a "one-size-fits-all" approach to infrastructure deployment is insufficient. Instead, planners can use these rich data insights to identify precisely where and what type of charging infrastructure—and corresponding truck parking—is needed most.

Corridor-Specific Insights: The study highlighted that different routes require different infrastructure approaches; regional corridors may require more frequent, distributed charging, while local freight routes may demand high-capacity hubs at specific dwell points.
Synergistic Energy Solutions: The Ray’s approach allows states to overlay this movement data with its proprietary GIS roadside solar tool. This enables the co-location of high-powered EV charging stations with on-site solar energy production within the highway right-of-way (ROW).
